Rajasthan Royals’ playoffs hopes are hanging by a thread as they now need to win all of their remaining fixtures, lest they want to rely on the results of other teams to help them sneak through. Dhawal Kulkarni was replaced by Anureet Singh in the recent reverse fixture but he could be brought back for this game owing to the latter’s underwhelming bowling performance at Indore.
Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson and skipper Ajinkya Rahane form the backbone of Rajasthan’s batting. Buttler has returned to form and is coming on the back of two consecutive half-centuries, though his 39-ball 51 in the last game against the Kings XI went in vain. Samson is currently hitting at a strike rate 142.85 and he is also the leading run-getter for his team with 310 runs. Rahane scored an unbeaten 65 not out too long ago and he will be expected to replicate that performance here. Among the bowlers, Jofra Archer has been the most impressive. The paceman has taken the most wickets for Rajasthan – eight from four matches – and the onus will be on him to provide the early breakthroughs. Jaydev Unadkat has been a tad expensive this IPL and this will put additional pressure on Ben Stokes and Shreyas Gopal to keep the runs down.
Rajasthan Royals find themselves in a lot of trouble currently placed at the bottom of the IPL 2018 league standings. They have managed to win just three out of the nine games played so far and cannot afford to have any more slip-ups from here onwards. The Royals have won just once in their last six matches and are going into this game having lost three on the bounce. Their previous encounter happened to be against the Kings XI Punjab themselves who went on to register a six-wicket victory.
Rajasthan Royals Predicted Playing 11
- Jos Buttler (wk), D’Arcy Short/Heinrich Klassen, Ajinkya Rahane (c), Sanju Samson, Ben Stokes, Rahul Tripathi, Krishnappa Gowtham, Jofra Archer, Shreyas Gopal, Jaydev Unadkat, Anureet Singh/Dhawal Kulkarni
Kings XI Punjab
Yuvraj Singh’s highest score from the five innings he has played for the Kings XI Punjab this season reads 20. The left-handed batsman was replaced by Manoj Tiwary in the match against the Rajasthan Royals. Tiwary is yet to be tested as he did not get a chance to bat in the last game and so the team will probably retain him for this upcoming fixture. Mayank Agarwal has failed to impress in the past few matches and he could make way for Manzoor Dar.
The opening pair of Chris Gayle and KL Rahul is doing an excellent job for the Kings XI Punjab and it will be crucial from the team’s perspective that at least one of them bats deep into the innings and scores big. While Rahul is among the season’s top five batsmen, Gayle has showed his class in every game barring that solitary failure against Rajasthan last time. Marcus Stoinis and Karun Nair have also chipped in with notable contributions every now and then and they too are key figures in this batting line-up. With 12 wickets each, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Andrew Tye will be the biggest challenge for the Royals. The Afghan off-spinner has been the more economical of the two and he will be looking to bag another three-fer in this reverse fixture.
Kings XI Punjab are inching closer toward that top-four spot. They are currently third in the standings with six wins and three losses from nine league matches and are just two more wins away from a guaranteed playoffs berth. After facing two consecutive defeats – against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians – the Kings bounced back with a convincing win over the Rajasthan Royals in their last match. In their six wins, the team has defended and chased down totals three times each.
Kings XI Punjab Predicted Playing 11
- Lokesh Rahul (wk), Chris Gayle, Karun Nair, Mayank Agarwal/Manzoor Dar, Marcus Stoinis, Manoj Tiwary, Ravichandran Ashwin (c), Axar Patel, Andrew Tye, Ankit Rajpoot, Mujeeb Ur Rahman
