Liverpool vs Tottenham preview: Tactical analysis & probable line-ups

Liverpool vs Tottenham preview: Spurs are without Eric Dier and Harry Winks for Sunday’s game against Liverpool at Anfield

Liverpool are still without Joe Gomez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain but hope to have Trent Alexander-Arnold, Xherdan Shaqiri and Naby Keita available after minor injuries. There’s a decent chance that all three will make it.

Provisional squad: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Matip, Robertson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Milner, Mane, Salah, Firmino, Mignolet, Lovren, Moreno, Henderson, Lallana, Shaqiri, Sturridge, Origi.

For Spurs, Eric Dier misses out – again – after sustaining a thigh injury on international duty with England, while Serge Aurier misses out with a hamstring strain, leaving the terrifying prospect of an in-form Sadio Mane up against Kieran Trippier. Harry Winks has not recovered from the hip flexor injury that ruled him out of England’s matches.

Provisional squad: Lloris, Gazzaniga, Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Sanchez, Rose, Walker-Peters, Sissoko, Foyth, Lucas, Wanyama, Skipp, Eriksen, Alli, Son, Lamela, Llorente, Kane.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on his players believing in themselves:

It’s not the first time we scored a late goal [in the last match before the international break], but it was massive and it felt really good.

Learn from your own experience, that’s the best thing you can do in life. And if it works out once, then it’s easier to believe it will work out again. It doesn’t mean it will, but it is easier to believe.

Their skills are similarly important, the attitude, character, very important too. But if you believe in something, it makes it more likely to happen, 100 per cent.

The problem is, I’m pretty sure Manchester City believes as well so one will be disappointed at the end of the season.

But let’s go for it. Nobody knows what will be on May 13, but we try everything to make it a big day for us.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino on his future after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was confirmed as Manchester United manager:

I never talked about rumours. But of course I need to congratulate him (Solskjaer) and wish him all the best now he is officially the new manager of Manchester United.

I don’t talk about rumours and in this period there will be a lot more. It always happens.

This season it is going to happen, last season, the season before. We assume all the rumours, it’s very natural.

We are focused, it doesn’t mean we will win all the games. It is our job, we need to live with this type of situation and we deal with that.

What are the best odds?

  • Liverpool win – 11/8
  • Draw – 3/1
  • Tottenham win – 5/1

What’s our prediction?

Liverpool were superior in just about every department in the reverse fixture at Wembley back in September – a fixture they won 2-1 – and the recent form of the two clubs suggests it may be a similar story on Sunday.

Liverpool are top of the league, have dropped points at home only twice in 15 Premier League games this season and – at Anfield – are scoring for fun.

Spurs have been really disappointing recently and have lost their last three away games in a row, and this could make it four on the bounce.

Prediction: Liverpool 3 Spurs 1
